Zelda's story

In late January, we were alerted to a shepherd mix pup in need at the Kroger on 3rd St. While looking for her, we spotted an injured black dog and knew we had to save her, too! After three days of both dogs evading us, we brought the trap out to be able to bring the pups to safety. Today, while searching for the black dog, a resident said she had been running around with a brown dog. Unfortunately, we did find the brown pup had passed on Friday evening. We picked her up and have arranged for her to have a dignified burial with our friends at Dixie Memorial. We named her Melinda.

It took all day today to get our black beauty but she is with us now! Her leg is injured and she appears to have given birth to many liters of puppies. Thankfully, she’s off to the vet for the treatment she so desperately deserves.

X-rays show Zelda was likely hit by a car about a year ago based on the remodeling. It probably left her very inactive for a few weeks at least when it happened because of the kind of injury. Her pelvis was broken in 3 places and her femoral neck was fractured. As far as treatment is concerned, we will treat her heartworms first which started today, then spay, and then do a femoral head ostectomy*. She was sedated today for X-rays and was treated for fleas, nails trimmed and had a bath.

Residents of the streets she was running had been feeding her chicken bones. Thankfully, she only had a couple small bone fragments in her intestines that will hopefully pass on their own.

Medical Update

2/6/18: Zelda is doing AMAZING! For such a scared street pup, Zelda has really begun to flourish in SDF's care. She is so loving and trusting of new people! She has begun the initial stages of heartworm treatment and is looking for a home to lay low in while she works on her recovery. After heartworm treatment, she will still need surgery on her leg, but for now we are managing her pain and she definitely doesn't let her slow it down. She is playful, loves snuggles, and is a champ on a leash and with learning new tricks. She loves to smile and would love if you would open up your low key home to her!

3/1/18: Zelda has begun heartworm treatment injections and had a rough couple of days, as a lot of pups do. She got some love and snuggles from the Grace staff and a few volunteers, but she would LOVE a couch to crash on where she gets daily snuggles 💜 Our pups like Zelda, who have spent so ling on the street and whose bodies wear from that life, need a comfy place and patient people to show them what life as a real pup is and begin to heal, both physically and emotionally, from their life on the street.
